Anemometer
The anemometer is a device used to measure wind velocity and wind pressure. The first anemometer was invented in 1846 by Thomas Romney Robinson.
This first device had four small cups arranged on a spinning metal rod. The speed of the cups spinning reveals the wind speed and pressure.
Today, the most popular anemometer has three cups instead of four. The reason is that the wind will pick it up and spin it easier. Several designs were experimented with to achieve a quality three cup design. Today's three cup anemometers are very accurate to less than 3% variance.
Anemometer and Energy
It is great to have an anemometer for your windmill or wind energy producing device. Windmills use a propeller and fin type anemometer that moves with the wind. They do not use the three cup design. Precise wind speed and wind direction can be measure for the efficiency of the windmill.
Other Anemometers
There are other ways to measure wind. You can use sonic devices, laser devices, hot wires, glass tubes, and even (ultra low tech) a ping pong ball with a string attached. My personal favorite is to lick my finger and hold it up.
